Hypothesis 2

Opportunities should be provided for students to practice carrying out a range of functions likely to be necessary in dealing with others in the target culture?

Traditional class room instructional settings tend to limit the role of the student to that of a responder; that is, students are most often asked to answer questions.
Students are also seldom asked to make inquiries narrate or describe events, hypothesize or argue or provide opinions in the targeted culture.

  1. Students who want to become proficient should not be limited to certain amounts of training if they so desire, the concept of carrying out a range of functions should be limitless and opportunities should not be just for advanced learning.

  2. Brian talked about the two places that Ojibwe is spoken is in the classroom and ceremonies. There are not many homes that speak only Ojibwe at home; therefore, I ask the question where is the opportunities for the student to hear Ojibwe. The opportunities to learn Ojibwe if our (referring to my community)communities were more fluent. I've talked to some folks that love the Wii-game and the interaction of the activities. That would be a great way for children and adults alike to learn the language in a fun enviroment.

  3. Miigwetch for the question and stopping in here. Well first of all, the main thing to learning the language is in your heart, its how much one wants to learn. For me being fortunate to speak my language and living in an area where absolutely no one speaks the ojibwa language the next best thing for me is i pick up the phone and talk to my brothers and sisters and my mother, that is such a pleasure to do whenever i have the opportunity.
As for good folks like you who really want to learn, i would recommend finding language nests or some kind of language preservation program and just be aggressive in learning the language. The next best thing to immersion would be just to travel to these remote areas and communities who still speak the language and just immerse with the group. I have always believed that its going to take sacrifice and money to save our languages and if it comes to that, than that is what we have to do. Finally i think its essential to do whatever it takes to try and learn the language, these things will have to start with us..I know u can do it..
